    Marking complex assignments using peer assessment with an electronic voting system and an automated feedback tool

    The work described in this paper relates to the development and use of a range of initiatives in order to mark complex masters' level assignments related to the development of computer web applications. In the past such assignments have proven difficult to mark since they assess a range of skills including programming, human computer interaction and design. Based on the experience of several years marking such assignments, the module delivery team decided to adopt an approach whereby the students marked each other's practical work using an electronic voting system (EVS). The results of this are presented in the paper along with statistical comparison with the tutors' marking, providing evidence for the efficacy of the approach. The second part of the assignment related to theory and documentation. This was marked by the tutors using an automated feedback tool. It was found that the time to mark the work was reduced by more than 30% in all cases compared to previous years.     The use of electronic voting and peer assessment to encourage the development of higher order thinking skills in learners

    In the research reported here, electronic voting and peer assessment were used with 215 first year computer science and information technology undergraduates undertaking an electronic media design module. In previous years it proved difficult for learners following this module to develop good quality practical skills resulting in poor results in practical tests. In this study, the module delivery team used electronic voting and a form of peer assessment in order to motivate learners and to engage them more deeply in learning. It was hypothesised that this would improve higher order thinking skills and lead to improved performance in practical work. A significant improvement in performance of 6% was achieved (p<0.001) as compared to previous years. We were able to show that the most likely reason for this was the use of electronic voting systems and peer assessment.     Methods to measure and track population perception and support within a manual wargame

    The outcomes of military campaigns depend to a large extent on the support of local and other wider population groups, so it is important to understand their perceptions. Here we briefly describe the approach used to represent support for organizations and factions in a professional wargame designed to represent military campaigns. This specific approach was developed originally using a simple marker track system that used a basic quantified set of relationships between military campaign effects and changes to the track levels. This marker track system was developed for military campaign wargames in the UK as a means to portray support or dissent in population groups relevant to the operations, but there was originally no mechanism to drive changes other than by expert judgment. Our improved approach continues the use of marker tracks but attempts to develop a more defensible method based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs for linking events to changes and levels on the tracks. We conducted experiments to quantify the relative importance of each element in Maslow’s hierarchy. We then continued by conducting a further experiment to identify the impact of a set of effects seen in a wargame against the Maslow elements. This has led to a set of quantified scores that may be used to drive the modifications to the marker tracks when wargame events occur. These scores are based on our initial experiments and may be updated for a specific application, perhaps for a specific setting or location in the world. The revised or enhanced approach aims to produce a transparent solution that can be understood by a military or security analyst, thus facilitating refinement, updating, and change

    A high sensitivity and low power circuit for the measurement of abnormal blood cell levels

    This paper describes a technique to detect blood cell levels based on the time-period modulation of a relaxation oscillator loaded with an Inter Digitated Capacitor (IDC). A digital readout circuit has been proposed to measure the time-period difference between the two oscillators loaded with samples of healthy and (potentially) unhealthy blood. A prototype circuit was designed in 65nm CMOS technology and post-layout simulations shows 15.25aF sensitivity. The total circuit occupies 2184µm2 silicon area and consumes 216µA from a 1V power supply

    A positive feedback-based op-amp gain enhancement technique for high precision applications

    A power-efficient, voltage gain enhancement technique for op-amps has been described. The proposed technique is robust against Process, Voltage, and Temperature (PVT) variations. It exploits a positive feedback-based gain enhancement technique without any latch-up issue, as opposed to previously proposed conductance cancellation techniques. In the proposed technique, four additional transconductance-stages (gm stages) are used to boost the gain of the main gm stage. The additional gm stages do not significantly increase the power dissipation. A prototype was designed in 65nm CMOS technology. It results in 81dB voltage gain, which is 21dB higher than the existing gainboosting technique. The proposed opamp works with as low a power supply as 0.8V, without compromising the performance, whereas the traditional gain-enhancement techniques start losing gain below a 1.1V supply. The circuit draws a total static current of 295μA and occupies 5000μm2 of silicon area

    A VGA linearity improvement technique for ECG analog front-end in 65nm CMOS

    This paper presents a 65nm CMOS low-power, highly linear variable gain amplifier (VGA) suitable for biomedical applications. Typical biological signal amplitudes are in the 0.5-100mV range, and therefore require circuits with a wide dynamic range. Existing VGA architectures mostly exhibit a poor linearity, due to very low local feedback loopgain. A technique to increase the loop-gain has been explored by adding additional feedback to the tail current source of the input differential pair. Stability analysis of the proposed technique was undertaken with pole-zero analysis. A prototype of Analog Front End (AFE) has been designed to provide 25-50dB gain, and post-layout simulations showed a 15dB reduction in the harmonic distortion for 20mV pk-pk input signal compared to the conventional architecture. The circuit occupies 3,108μm2 silicon area and consumes 0.43μA from a 1.2V power supply

    Acoustic Confidence Measures for Segmenting Broadcast News

    In this paper we define an acoustic confidence measure based on the estimates of local posterior probabilities produced by a HMM/ANN large vocabulary continuous speech recognition system. We use this measure to segment continuous audio into regions where it is and is not appropriate to expend recognition effort. The segmentation is computationally inexpensive and provides reductions in both overall word error rate and decoding time. The technique is evaluated using material from the Broadcast News corpus
